The Art of Letting Go, Moving On & Never Looking Back

The Art of Letting Go

For anyone who is ready to let go.

This is letting go. And this is moving forward. Here are a few quotes to help anyone struggling or starting to let go.

Of anything holding you back from your potential happiness

“You will find that it is necessary to let things go; simply for the reason that they are heavy. So let them go, let go of them. I tie no weights to my ankles.”

― C. Joybell C.

Sometimes you need to let go when you find that, by holding on to the very thing you think you want, you are diminishing your own happiness and wellbeing.

Of draining relationships

“I didn’t leave because
I stopped loving you,
I left because the longer
I stayed the less I loved myself.”

― Rupi Kaur

Here’s the thing about relationships that don’t build you up or encourage you–you don’t need them. If you find that a relationship is more draining than it is life-giving, learn to step away and say, “no.” And remember, setting boundaries is a form of care towards yourself. It is not cruelty towards any other person.

Of unrealistic expectations of self

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.”

― J.K. Rowling

Be okay with not being perfect. The perfect student, co-worker, child, parent, etc. Perfection isn’t the goal here, folks. Because, you will fall short. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t be great at whatever it is you’re trying to do. It just means you’ll have loads of opportunities to fail and try again. It’s like what ‘they’ say: it’s the journey, not the destination.

Of fear of missing out on an opportunity

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

― Alexander Graham Bell

Stop waiting for that closed door to open. It’s shut for a reason. Keep walking. There just might be another door waiting for you to knock on and walk right through.

Of what is comfortable

“Courage is the power to let go of the familiar.”

― Raymond Lindquist

Don’t you know that most of what you really want is just waiting outside of your comfort zone? Or maybe that was just something I saw sewn on a throw pillow on Etsy. Either way, it has some truth to it. In order to get somewhere you’ve never gone before, you’re going to have to do something you’ve never done before. That’s the beauty of stepping outside of what you know and stepping bravely into something new, different, unfamiliar. Stop holding yourself back and go for it. What do you have to lose?

Of something that just keeps coming back

Letting go may sound simple, but rarely is it a one-time thing. Just keep letting go, until one day it’s gone for good.

― Eleanor Brownn

If they keep coming back into your life, maybe it’s meant to be. Or maybe it’s just another reminder of why you let go in the first place. It’s not always a sign. Sometimes you need to look back at and realize, Oh yea–that’s why I walked awayDon’t be fooled. Trust yourself. If you decided at the time that it wasn’t right or what you needed, have faith that you knew exactly what you were doing when you made that choice.

Of pain, even

“People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar. ”

― Thich Nhat Hahn

It’s easy to let it fester and grow–the pain, I mean. But sometimes you need to come to terms with what has happened, give yourself time to grieve, and then move on forward. Unfortunately, there’s not a time limit on how long pain will sting, but rest assured that with time, (pardon the cliche) it will get easier.

Of the past

You’ll just keep crashing if you never take your eyes off the rearview mirror.

― Leo Christopher

In yoga, my teacher always says that you should fix your eyes in the direction you want your body to go. I think this makes sense in regards to life too. Where do you want to go? Back? Or do you want to move forward and keep going towards your goals? Set your eyes forward, not behind you. You’re not going there. And trust me, you don’t want to miss the amazing things that are just ahead of you.

Twenty-something, lover of Jesus. I like animals (esp. dogs), Fun-Fetti cupcakes and yoga. I love God and do my best to love others. I hate too-warm weather and socks that fall into your shoes when you walk. I'm a huge fan of Christian rap and cold, sunny days.
